What is IATF 16949?

The IATF 16949 is an international standard awarded by the International Automotive Task Force for the production of automotive related products.

The standard encompasses the manufacturing, installation and servicing of automotive products, and recognises the quality of management systems within these processes.

IATF 16949 Requirements

In order to gain the IATF 16949 standard, an audit must be performed which examines specific requirements of the management system. For instance, the automotive quality management system must be maintained to an above standard - this includes frequent improvement of the management system, prevention of defects, and minimal waste and product variation in the supply chain.

What are the Benefits of IATF 16949?

There are many benefits to gaining the IATF 16949 accreditation. The IATF 16949 standard helps to:

  • Improve the quality of manufacturing processes and products for the automotive industry.
  • Reduce costs associated with operations.
  • Reduce amount of waste created.
  • Improve the credibility of businesses who earn the accreditation.
  • Increase customer satisfaction with the products they receive.

IATF 16949 vs ISO 9001

IATF 16949 is based on ISO 9001 and works in conjunction with the standard, incorporating all requirements of the ISO standard. Where the IATF 16949 differentiates from ISO 9001 is in its specificity of the automotive industry, providing guidance explicitly relating to production processes for the automotive industry. Above else, this specificity makes IATF 16949 a more specialist, detailed, and difficult standard, demonstrating the dedication and quality of the manufacturer in attaining and maintaining it.
